David Sanborn Biography

download georgian version

July 30, 1945
David William Sanborn was born in Tampa, Florida and raised in St. Louis, Missouri
1945-1956
David had polio when he was 3 years old, and therefore spent some time in an iron lung and was strongly encouraged to pick up a wind instrument as part of his physical therapy. He chose the alto saxophone because he was listening to that instrument on the radio a lot and identified with it most.
1957-1962
David backed up Albert King when his friend talked Albert into letting Dave come up on a song. In the same year, Little Milton came into town and David had the opportunity to play with him as well. There is a great online article written talking about this story. Later he got the opportunity to play with Gil Evans in local clubs before he was even out of High School. At the age of 18 he decided it was fate and went on to study music. "When I was 17 or 18", David says, "and it was time to figure out what to do with my life. I realized that I didn't enjoy anything as much as I enjoyed playing music. I felt that I had no choice, that I HAD to become a musician. Either that or stealing cars."
1967-1966
David studied at Northwestern University for one year under Fred Hemke (made Hemke reeds), then he attended the University of Iowa. David got married and had a child named Jonathan Sanborn. Since the birth of his son, all albums have been dedicated to Jonathan.
1967-1971
Encouraged by his friend who was in the Paul Butterfield Band, David went to San Francisco for a few weeks and ended up moving there. He subsequently joined the Paul Butterfield Band and recorded with them. David played at Woodstock with Paul Butterfield and sometimes retells the story at his live shows. It's a classic tale.
1972-1974
David separated from his wife at this time. He was playing with Stevie Wonder and on the road with David Bowie at the time. He went on the road with the Rolling Stones, The Brecker Brothers, and Gil Evans as well at this time.
1975-1979
David released his first solo album Taking Off in 1975. In the following years David would have to make a choice whether he wanted to be a sideman or a solo artist. Lucky for us he chose to become an Artist.
1980-1987
Breakthrough album Hideaway (1980), Grammy Winning Voyeur (1981), He went to Italy to record for the movie Stella Sulla Citta and ended up in the movie as well.
1988-1991
David received his second Grammy with the album "Double Vision" released in 1986 with Bob James. Lorne Michaels, (Executive producer of Saturday Night Live) started a TV show called Night Music and paired up David with Jools Holland. Other highlights he had at this time were a radio show in New York, and a cameo in the movie Scrooged starring Bill Murray.
1992-1997
Second marriage to jazz journalist Rikke Loyd. David also switched labels sort of, from Warner Brothers to Elektra Records. WEA is Warner/Elektra/Atlantic so he didn't really change labels only divisions. In 1995 he released the album "Pearls" which featured a full orchestra on tour with David, the album was featured in the Barbara Streisand and Jeff Bridges movie The Mirror Has Two Faces.
1997-1998
Toured in Europe as part of the Legends band with Eric Clapton, Steve Gadd, Marcus Miller, and Joe Sample. Release of the album "Songs From The Night Before" (Produced by longtime bandmate Ricky Peterson) and hosted the TV show After New Years Eve.
1999-2002
Hosted another After New Years Eve, release of the Grammy Winning album Inside. Extensive touring. Left Elektra and signed with the Verve Music Group. David separated from his second wife Rikki. The album "Essentials" was just released this past month and David is currently touring.
Gil Goldstein Biography

Gil Goldstein, an excellent pianist and synthesizer player, actually started on the accordion. In the late '80s, he resumed doubling on it for special occasions, such as a recording project for Michel Petrucciani and for his own sessions. Earlier, Goldstein had picked up important experience playing with Pat Martino , Jim Hall , Billy Cobham , the Gil Evans Orchestra (starting in 1983), and Wayne Shorter . In 1991, he helped in reconstructing Gil Evans ' arrangements for Miles Davis ' Montreux Jazz Festival concert and he has recorded as a leader for Chiaroscuro (1977), Muse, Blue Note, World Pacific, and Big World. Generally, Gil Goldstein's music grooves while utilizing the influences of other cultures (particularly Latin America).

Christian McBride Biography

Christian McBride Biography Everyone's favorite young acoustic bassist of the 1990s, Christian McBride's large sound and expertise, both with plucked and bowed solos, recall Ray Brown and particularly Paul Chambers . He actually started on electric bass when he was eight and took R&B gigs in high school, but by then he was getting more interested in jazz and playing the acoustic bass. McBride studied at Juilliard (starting in 1989) and then played briefly in the bands of Bobby Watson , Benny Golson , Roy Hargrove , and Freddie Hubbard . He toured with the Benny Green Trio , played duets with Ray Brown at the 1994 Monterey Jazz Festival and recorded his debut as a leader for Verve before touring with his own group in 1995. Family Affair followed in 1998. In 2000, McBride released his most ambitious project, Sci-Fi .
Terri-Lyne Carrington Biography

Terri Lyne Carrington was a popular side player throughout the 1980s and '90s, and contributed her funky drum style to many different settings. Carrington was a bit of a prodigy, impressing many veteran jazz players while still a child, and was one of the first significant female drummers in jazz. Moving to New York City in the early 80's, she began to get gigs with many local muscians before gaining enough attention to warrant another move to California. It was there she was seen by millions on a nightly basis as a member of the band on the Arsenio Hall Show and worked well with Wayne Shorter 's late-'80s band. But her debut recording as a leader (for Verve Forecast in 1989) was disappointingly lightweight. Into the late '90s, Carrington has continued working steadily and is heard best in funk settings, as exeplified by her work as a side player for Herbie Hancock . At the turn of the century, her second solo album began to take shape and was eventually released as Jazz Is a Spirit in 2002.
Don Alias Biography

A veteran percussionist who first came to fame in the early '70s playing with Miles Davis , Don Alias has done many jazz, jazz-rock and pop sessions. He has no sessions available as a leader, but can be heard on CDs by Carla Bley , Michael Brecker , Joey Calderazzo , Terry Lyne Carrington and Peter Erskine among many others.
